GOSPEL PEARLS

Grace and Truth

I have come not to abolish but to fulfil. (Mt 5:17)

Schegge di vangelo 16_02_2020 Italiano Español

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.
I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.
Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,
not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter
will pass from the law,
until all things have taken place.
Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments
and teaches others to do so
will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.
But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments
will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses
that of the scribes and Pharisees,
you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. (...) (Mt 5: 17-37)

Jesus, being God, is Grace and Truth: Grace because He did not consider His divine nature a jealous treasure but for our salvation. He freely annihilated Himself by descending, through His incarnation, to the underworld of the human condition sharing all the limitations and negative experiences of suffering and death, with the exception of sin. Truth, because by keeping His divine nature he reveals to each of us the elevated and unique dignity of the mission entrusted to Him and the only predestination for which He was created. Thus, with Grace and Truth Jesus constitutes the fulfilment of the Law because He is the prototype of the person who fulfils the commandments with love and the prophets because they, before anticipating future events, had the task of announcing the Truth to the people of that time and to those who would come after them.
